Many local food pantries have been seeing a steady stream of people looking for food. Oftentimes these individuals are not only hungry, but are facing other challenges related to poverty, such as being uninsured. The disease is spread by mosquitoes, and no dog is out of its reach in the U.S. Though the heaviest infection rates are along the Mississippi River and its tributaries, heartworm is found in all 50 states.
