In last month’s issue, we gave a sketch of the Riverwest Investment Cooperative, the local housing investment group that celebrated its second annual membership meeting in August. This month we want to trace the story of RIC over the past twelve months as it changed from a handful of dreamers to a property-holding cooperative capable of qualifying for a loan of over $100,000 and rehabbing the very distressed house at 2543 N. Holton. There is quite a cast of characters.

If you’ve got a few dollars to spare and the itch to do a little shopping, make sure you check out the First Annual Oakland Avenue Sidewalk Sale. Several business owners on the 3400 block of Oakland Ave have agreed to display their goods outside on September 10 and 11.
The Drakes
Douglas and Thallis Drake have lived in Riverwest for more than 40 years. They know the nooks and crannies of the neighborhood, but when asked about their favorite Riverwest attraction, Thallis laughs and replies, “Our house!”
