gutter grrls

It’s easy to spot a couple of the gutter grrls at the local coffee shop — they’re the only ones in the place having a good time and laughing at 10:00 on a Sunday morning. Maybe it was the gutter grrls T-shirt that gave them away. These Photoshop provocateurs prefer to remain semi-anonymous, “working behind the camera and exploiting others.” Their subjects always receive the disclaimer — “We will exploit you.”

Sex Sells

On my way to meet Tool Shed proprietor, Eilis O’Herlihy at the Riverwest Co-op Cafe, I tried to imagine what the owner of an erotic boutique might look like — an Annie Sprinkle type or maybe more of the Betty Paige ilk? Or maybe someone wearing a trench coat and fedora? When I walked into the tiny cafe, I found a youngish woman wearing a secondhand sweater and a pair of green suede boots I coveted at first sight.

Let’s Start a Revolution

Like many creative projects, Kristin Catalano’s Let’s Start a Revolution isn’t exactly what she set out to make. While visiting family on break from UCLA, her cousin took her to see Trolley, and the rest, as they say, is now available for sale at Exclusive Music Company. “I wanted to do a documentary on my family originally, but my grandparents weren’t very cooperative. I still want to do that. . .it was more like, ‘Wow you guys are so good.’ It was very of the moment, very right place, right time. It really helps them as a promotional tool, too.

Kenilworth Building Update

On Jan. 20 the Milwaukee Redevelopment Authority approved a plan to sell $68 million in bonds to finance redevelopment of the Kenilworth Building at 1925 E. Kenilworth Pl.

Art vs. (Witch)Craft

While the rest of the kids are busy slamming quadruple espressos and filling ashtrays to unnatural capacities at Fuel Cafe, some may want to escape to Riverwest’s newest addition Tree of Life. Located across the street from the Foundation at 2713 N. Bremen St., Tree of Life serves as a bookstore, artisan gallery and temple for Milwaukee’s Neo-Pagan/Wiccan community.
