ArtWalk is the state’s largest walking tour of artists’ homes and studios, neighborhood galleries and various alternative spaces. It is organized and sponsored by the Riverwest Artists Association (RAA). The walking tour includes more than 100 established and emerging visual artists and performers at 40 site throughout Riverwest. Many area restaurants and taverns also participate, giving the event the overall quality of a neighborhood-wide open house for the arts.

Camera for Hire
When making arrangements to meet with Heidi Spencer, the filmmaker asked, “Wanna grab a beer?” Not having to be asked twice, I agreed to meet her at Paddy’s Pub, which showed movies on a huge screen behind us. As we sipped our pints of Guinness and smoked her American Spirits, Spencer talked about how she always wanted to put her music into films. After getting a C+ in her first film class, she dropped out of film school and traveled all over the country. After “hitting the end of the road so many times” at the age of 25, she decided to start over. She graduated with a BFA in Film at UWM this past December with high honors, and took first place in the Student Film Festival a couple years ago.

Outdoor Market Debuts in July
The indoor market, scheduled to open for the fall season, was constructed with a focus on natural light and ventilation as well as other “green building techniques.” The structure will have 21,500 square feet on the ground floor and 13,000 square feet on the second floor. A total of 24 vendors will occupy the main floor. Two fresh produce stands with vegetables, fruits, spices and flowers are planned for the center of the market. In spaces around the edges, shops will offer cheese, bakery goods, fresh meats and seafood, ice cream, soup, and specialty foods from Wisconsin.

Salon du Monde – A Cut Above
After ascending the winding steps to the second floor at 1437 E. Brady St., the first thing I notice as I enter the salon is that the walls are painted a soothing blue, not unlike a wide-open blue sky. Owner Gail Grider greets me as I enter. She designed and decorated the salon herself. Red accents grab your eye while shag pillows on the waiting room couches add a touch of whimsy.

Citywide Arts Festival Planned
In an effort to get the community to recognize the role of the arts in our lives and have fun celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Milwaukee High School of the Arts, MHSA Marketing Director Heather Aldrich is spearheading the ExperienceArt 2005 RiverWalk. A two-day extravaganza, the event is drawing support from businesses along the RiverWalk downtown and in the Third Ward, as well as established arts groups in the city.
