Brophy Declares Bankruptcy

Two years ago, landlord Tim Brophy hid under one of his tenant’s beds, hoping the police wouldn’t find him. They did. The city was after him then — and still — because of unpaid property taxes and outstanding fines relating to code violations on his vast collection of rental units in Riverwest, Harambee, Brewers Hill, and the East Side, which during its peak included more than 100 properties.

That wouldn’t be the 4th of July variety that Milwaukeeans can take in July 3 at the Lakefront, in Gordon Park on July 5, or for weeks to come as neighbor kids set off what remains from this month’s celebration.

The fireworks he was talking about in a June 28 budget hearing at Riverside High School were the fiscal kind. To live up to his campaign promise of not raising the tax levy, Barrett asked departments to submit budgets that would make up for the anticipated $34 million shortfall.

Landlord Brophy Fined $15,000+

A Milwaukee landlord found out this week that there is a price to pay for endangering tenants by not addressing repeated code violations at properties he owns in the city.

On Tuesday, Municipal Court Judge David Halbrooks followed city recommendations and rendered guilty verdicts in five city code compliance cases against east side resident and landlord Timothy Brophy, Jr. and ordered him to pay forfeitures of $15,524.
