Romance was in the air Wednesday, February 11, along with a sense of caring for the community as the Twisted Fork hosted the Urban Ecology Center’s fundraiser, Speed Dating for Nature Lovers.

A Dalmatian, a file chock-full of Urban Ecology Center materials, a formidable pile of sociology books, and several hardwood shelves laden with scrap booking paraphernalia. These are what catches the eye as Lorraine Jacobs sits at her dining room table in her light-green, walk-up home on the 2400 block of Dousman and talks about her life after retiring this past September. She worked a combined 30 years with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and Milwaukee Public Schools.

How can the climate be warming when it’s -9 degrees Fahrenheit outside? Why do some plants stay green in the fall?

Accusations Fly as Court of Appeals Campaign Heats Up
Appellate Judge Charles Schudson accuses Shepherd Express of printing an error-riddled, disinformation and attack article to support Schudson’s campaign opponent, Joan Kessler. Kessler’s husband is a close personal friend of Shepherd publisher, Louis Fortis. Fortis insists, “Other than the small items we corrected, that article is 100 percent factually correct.” Another recent article in the Shepherd falsely charged that mayoral candidate Sandy Folaron had overdue property taxes in excess of $7000. Fortis was on hand at the Folaron campaign on election night to express his apologies.
