Winter in Riverwest: Our Neighborhood is Alive

As a recent transplant to Milwaukee, a self-described outdoor fanatic, and a not-so-frequent bar-goer, the thought of making recommendations about what to do in Riverwest in the winter is, well…a little intimidating. But the truth is, there is a wide range of activities to keep us occupied during the cold, gray winter months–even the most staid of Riverwesters (if there are any out there).

Dominos!

On almost any evening at Club Caribe, or Club 99, or the Barceloneta Lounge, groups of four quiet men hunker over tables dedicated to dominoes. This ancient game of Chinese origin has a passionate following among the Hispanic residents of Riverwest. And not unlike the bowling leagues that grew up at the Polish Falcon from Polish interest in ten pins, a domino league meets on Sundays to play the “bones.” Twenty taverns, ten from the Milwaukee area and ten from the Chicago area, send teams with as many as 150 people participating.

Riverwester Runs for Judge

This past month at a gathering of family and friends to celebrate his birthday, life-long Riverwest resident David Borowski declared his candidacy for circuit court judge. Borowski spent his childhood at 2549 N. Bremen St. in the shadow of St. Casimir. His family residence had been an ice cream store run by his grandparents. His father Leonard served Milwaukee County as a social worker while his mother Mary Anne taught school for MPS.
