What is it about Milwaukee lately? We’ve kind of mooched along here for years, not too talented, not too dumb, on a nice lakeshore…a good place to be from. Now all of a sudden, all sorts of people find us terribly interesting.

Third World America
There are 12.7 million jobs located in America’s inner cities — about 8 percent of this country’s private sector. Average annual salary for jobs located in inner cities is $38,000. Average salaries for jobs in the surrounding areas are $39,000. Nationwide, 77 percent of the jobs in America’s inner cities are held by commuters from surrounding areas, not by inner city residents.
Fourteen and Counting
It was cold and windy when Judith Hooks arrived at my home for dinner. The occasion was to celebrate her promotion as the person in charge of rentals at the Charles Allis and Villa Terrace Museums–a full-time position and a nice reward for part-timing these past few years. We wolfed down chicken breasts and green beans while toasting her rise with a 2003 Macon-Charnay. Beer didn’t seem quite right that night.
Art & Politics
Some things in life should be done effectively, not efficiently, said Elliot Eisner, a Stanford University art and education professor, adding that making love or having a meal are not efficient activities. The crowd gathered at the Milwaukee Art Museum for an October 14 seminar loved the comment.
Fear & Trembling
“A baby was found with its head under a rock. It’s head was lopsided and it’s eyes were masses of pus. Unfortunately, it was alive. We hoped that it would die.” (War photographer Eugene Smith. Aperture Monograph, Aperture Magazine, 1969)
