Empower, Educate, Advocate: The Riverwest Neighborhood Association

by Ruth Weill

Our mission is to empower, educate and advocate for residents of the Riverwest Neighborhood. The Riverwest Neighborhood Association (RNA) has been working toward this mission since 2000 when a group of neighbors began the organization in response to the Neighborhood Strategic Plan (NSP), a neighborhood-generated document created through a project funded by Community Development Block Grants.

Ten Years Passing

 A Former Soldier’s Reflection

by Paul Moriarity

On a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon in June of 2002 I was dismissed from my final formation in the Wisconsin Army National Guard Armory on Richards Street. I stood at attention for the last time in jeans and a white t-shirt while the commanding officer read off some announcements. I had turned in all of my gear and uniforms.

The Gathering by the Waters festival is a meeting of three different tribes – Latino, Native, and Polish Americans of the Lincoln Village neighborhood. The event will celebrate the three cultures and give them a chance to break bread together, and enjoy music, a parade, and a peace offering ceremony at sunset.

The festival is being organized by Urban Anthropology, Inc. (UrbAn) where Llysa Spencer works as a cultural anthropologist.
