Back to School: UWM Students Make Riverwest Their Home
Johanna Hoffman, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee senior majoring in social work, used to live on Oakland Ave. But three years ago, attracted by cheaper rent and the diversity of the area, she moved to Riverwest. Besides offering traditional student attractions like lower cost of living and easy access to UWM, Riverwest, she says, “is a pretty quiet area. Oakland was a lot noisier. I didn’t feel safe over there.”

If you’ve got a few dollars to spare and the itch to do a little shopping, make sure you check out the First Annual Oakland Avenue Sidewalk Sale. Several business owners on the 3400 block of Oakland Ave have agreed to display their goods outside on September 10 and 11.

Future Prospects
Prospect Mall, the well-known East Side location with a somewhat dusty image, has been sold to an investment partnership with Milwaukee and Chicago roots. Despite the building’s familiarity to East Siders, its popularity as a destination had not reached its potential, and some tenants have closed their doors.
