One bows, then enters the downstairs shrine room. Rows of royal blue and lemon yellow cushions are arranged in short rows on the floor. There are simple but striking fresh flower arrangements done in the Japanese Ikebana style perched on windowsills, shrines and tables. The frosted windows diffuse the light and contribute to the room’s atmosphere of quiet, uncluttered serenity.
Business Spotlight
Local business features.
Nile
Nile, which opened in April, is a salon, tattoo/piercing shop and jewelry store all rolled into one. Co-owned by husband and wife Jon and Jodi Westmore, Nile aims to take the sleaze and intimidation factor out of tattoos and piercing. Yet despite glossy fashion magazines, flowers, scented candles and an assortment of herbal teas scattered throughout the salon, Nile boasts a distinct Riverwest vibe.
Salon du Monde – A Cut Above
After ascending the winding steps to the second floor at 1437 E. Brady St., the first thing I notice as I enter the salon is that the walls are painted a soothing blue, not unlike a wide-open blue sky. Owner Gail Grider greets me as I enter. She designed and decorated the salon herself. Red accents grab your eye while shag pillows on the waiting room couches add a touch of whimsy.
Sex Sells
On my way to meet Tool Shed proprietor, Eilis O’Herlihy at the Riverwest Co-op Cafe, I tried to imagine what the owner of an erotic boutique might look like — an Annie Sprinkle type or maybe more of the Betty Paige ilk? Or maybe someone wearing a trench coat and fedora? When I walked into the tiny cafe, I found a youngish woman wearing a secondhand sweater and a pair of green suede boots I coveted at first sight.
A Labor of Love
Work at something you love and success will follow. We’ve all heard it, but who believes it? Natalya Sonina, owner of Natasha’s Tailoring and Dry Cleaning at 3803 N. Oakland Ave., actually proves it.
