Big, Bigger, Best

A group of athletes runs competitively and proudly to a slogan that strikes a familiar chord with me because of my rather “full-ish” figure. You don’t have to be thin to be fit. This group is Team Clydesdale USA, and they gallop to this mantra via a weight class that specifically recognizes big, heavyweight people who race – not fat people (though of course they’re not excluded) – but big.

Citizen Scientists

When you hear the word “scientist,” what comes to mind? A man with a white lab coat, goggles, and frizzy hair holding a beaker of bubbling, mysterious liquid? How about a grandmother of three, tagging a monarch butterfly? How about a high school student counting snakes in a neighborhood park, or your co-worker listening for frog calls at dusk on a summer weekend? How about — YOU — doing any of these things, and more?

Millie McDonald

On the opening day of classes for the 2004-2005 school year, Millie McDonald headed across the river to Maryland Avenue School. There she helped her three children settle into their new Montessori classes, then she headed south to start her own classes at Alverno College. Going to school has been a major theme in Millie’s life for a decade.
