In today’s economic climate, a good job can be hard to come by. It can be even harder for those without the education or resources to land a job that provides a living wage. That’s where Work for Wisconsin, Inc., (WFW) comes in. The non-profit organization, which recently moved its offices to Riverwest from downtown, partners with businesses and educational institutions to help low-income people get and keep career-track, family-supporting jobs. 90 percent of those who benefit from WFW’s programs are inner city Milwaukee residents.

New Family Health Center Provides Range of Services
Columbia-St. Mary’s opened its new Family Health Center on the corner of North and Humboldt Avenues on Monday, March 3. The health care provider chose the Riverwest location in the storefronts adjacent to the Jewel-Osco store because it is centered in the community that it serves.

BCU Annual Meeting and Financial Report: Riverwest Moves Closer to Getting its Own Credit Union Branch in the Neighborhood
Attendees of the recent annual Brewery Credit Union (BCU) membership meeting were treated to a continental breakfast and updates from the credit union’s President, Jim Schrimpf, Vice President Steve Janssen, and Paul Copper, Chairman of the Board of Directors. More than 40 people came to the Italian Community Center on Saturday, March 1 for the annual meeting.

Nueva Yores

“Nueva Yores.” They meant New York, the main destination for people on the Island, but the term became the popular shorthand for all destinations on the mainland. In time, everyone in Puerto Rico had at least one family member in “Nueva Yores.” Milwaukee’s first major Puerto Rican neighborhood was established in the late 1940s. It was located just northeast of downtown, in an area of older homes and apartment buildings bounded roughly by Milwaukee, Van Buren, State, and Lyon Streets.

How We Lost the War on Terrorism

As the bombs fall on Iraq and the tanks roll on, the future of Saddam and his party appears to be ending in flames. Saddam, like many Arabs, is resentful of U.S. power and influence in the Middle East. He tried to use belligerent statements and the threat of poison to scare the U.S. away. He will be gone and possibly soon forgotten on the world stage.
But the war has little to do with this one man. This conflict, according to President Bush, has something to do with the war on terrorism. The war on terrorism has become the overriding justification for a list of sins.
