MILWAUKEE RECREATION PLANS 10TH ANNUAL FAMILY FUN AT HALLOWEEN GLEN Event combines Halloween fun with outdoor education This year marks the 10th Anniversary of Milwaukee Recreation’s “natural alternative” to the usual haunted houses. Family Fun at Halloween Glen enables youth to learn about nature through a fun and interactive program in the outdoor setting of Hawthorn Glen, Milwaukee Recreation’s 23-acre nature center at 1130 N. 60th St. The program will run every half hour beginning at 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 17 and Saturday, October 18 (rain or shine). “Families who attend Halloween Glen should expect a fun, Halloween-themed experience with an educational twist,” says MPS Assistant Recreation Supervisor Kevin Reed. “We’ve hired actors to dress up as trick-or-treaters, skeletons, and other Halloween characters, but they won’t be scaring anyone. Instead, this talented group will present interactive skits at seven elaborately decorated stations along the lighted trails of Hawthorn Glen. For example, our skeleton will talk about how dead things decompose.” Following the program, families will make their own Halloween art (a new addition to the event) and enjoy refreshments like pretzel bones, halloweenies, and witches’ brew. Families with children between the ages of 4 and 12 will enjoy the program most, but everyone is welcome to attend for $4.00 per person (children 3 and under may attend for free). Participants must register in advance by calling 475-8180 or downloading the registration form at www.MilwaukeeRecreation.net. Because parking is limited at Hawthorn Glen, all participants must park at MPS Central Services, 5225 W. Vliet St., and use the free shuttle service to and from the event. Milwaukee Recreation is a non-profit department of Milwaukee Public Schools, established in 1911 to provide the entire community with affordable and enriching recreational activities.
