A MEETING HOSTED BY RNA was held on December 12 with reps from the YMCA (Jesse Greenlee & Julius Agara), Ald. D’Amato & Johnson-Odom, and Sups. Johnson & Broderick about keeping the YMCA Community Development Corp. (CDC) office open at 604 E. Center St. and staffed during 2003. The CDC is funded by CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) funds from the city which were drastically cut by for 2003. Therefore, the Y has had to reduce staff and cut back on overhead. CDC Staff have included Jan Christensen, Community Organizer, who’s position was terminated Dec. 31 due to funding cuts. Vince Bushell, Neighborhood Planner, INRS Coordinator (Integrated Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy), is the sole employee. The YMCA CDC planned to close the Center St. office and move the staff person over to the YMCA Holton Youth Center. RNA members, both Aldermen and both Supervisors disagreed with that plan and prefer to have the Center St. office remain open to provide a more prominent and visible location. The YMCA CDC has agreed to a one-month extension – the Center St. office will stay open until January 31. THIS GIVES US TIME TO ACT. We need your help. We would like to raise $5,000 towards office overhead costs. Donations are tax-deductible and any amount will help. ALL earmarked DONATIONS will be used only for the YMCA CDC -Riverwest office, so your money stays right here in the neighborhood to benefit the neighborhood. So sit down, pull out that check book, and make out a check payable to: YMCA. Mail without delay to: YMCA CDC-RIVERWEST 2003 OFFICE CAMPAIGN, 604 E.
