by Jan Christensen Ah! Spring in Riverwest! Time to stop and . . . smell the . . . garbage . . . The annual Riverwest Spring Clean Up is set for Saturday, April 20. There are a couple ways to get involved. You can call Jan Christensen at 263-1380 to register as a coordinator for your block or other area. Then convince your neighbors to join you on Saturday morning, April 20. (Luring them with the promise of food at your place afterwards may work well. Why not organize a potluck?) Come to the YMCA Holton Youth Center, 510 E. Burleigh, at 8:45 am on Saturday, where you can pick up free garbage bags and gloves for your crew. Spend the morning getting to know your neighbors while you pick up the garbage and litter in lawns, streets, vacant lots and back alleys around your homes. Put the garbage in one of the dumpsters that will be located around the neighborhood. Then get together to relax afterwards. Or, if you would rather, come to the Holton Youth Center, join the crews there, and go out to work on specified areas in the neighborhood. Plans are in the works to concentrate on Holton Street, Garden Park, Greenfolks Garden, and several other common green spaces and identified “hot spots.” If you would like to suggest a certain area to receive special attention, or if you would like more information on the Clean Up, please call Jan Christensen or Tarvus Hawthorne. After the Clean Up, join the hard working crew as we celebrate with food and entertainment at the Holton Youth Center. Please take that opportunity to return the gloves if you borrowed them. The Spring Clean Up is sponsored by the YMCA Community Development Corp., YMCA Holton Youth Center, COA and SDC Community Partners with help and cooperation from many more community organizations. We’re getting ready for a great summer in Riverwest!
