The Milwaukee County Conservation Coalition hosted a public forum January 26 with County Executive candidates Joe Klein (I), David Riemer (D), and County Executive Scott Walker (R). Here’s a report on where they stand on issues, particularly those in which differences of opinion were expressed.

East Sider Joe Klein to Run for County Executive
It seems as though there will be a primary for Milwaukee County Executive in February 2004, with east sider Joe Klein joining David Riemer and Jose Caban to challenge incumbent Scott Walker for the position that Walker won after the recall and runoff in April 2002.
Lawbreaking Freeway Expansionists and their Dirty Money
County Executive Scott Walker illegally accepted campaign donations totaling more than $46,000 without identifying the occupation of the source as required by law. Some of our friends from HNTB — the Halliburton of Wisconsin road building — popped up on the list of mystery donors. Among them were Ken Graham ($2,000 in donations) and Harvey Hammond ($1,000 in donations). On the other side of the political donation ledger, road-building firms donated more than $70,000 to a Washington, D.C. group that then funneled it back to the state — allegedly illegally — to help Democratic candidates. The Washington money-laundering figures prominently in one of the felony counts pending against Chuck Chvala.
Mayoral Candidates on Freeway Expansion
Nine mayoral candidates were asked “As mayor, would you support or oppose SEWRPC’s proposed $6.5 billion freeway expansion and reconstruction project, and what action would you take based on your position?” Seven replied….
Scott Walker’s Blatant Law-Breaking Unmasked
Sept. 10–According to the Story Hill Neighborhood Association, County Executive and freeway expansion zealot Scott Walker “accepted more than $46,000 in campaign donations without identifying the donors’ occupations, as is required by law.” Several are prominent members of the construction and road-building industry.
