A View From the Back of a Push Cart

As I looked down at my teammate dragging along underneath our cart, the skin on his back experiencing up close and personal every inch of Center Street’s rough asphalt surface, I wondered, “What brought us to this point?” Quickly shaking off this bout of introspection, I snapped out of it and yelled down to the grimacing lad, “Quit goofing off, get up and push!!”

Lindsay Severtson

After Lindsay Severtson had her first child four and a half years ago, she went through a period of post partum depression. Severtson, an easygoing woman with a ready laugh, attributes her depression to isolation from other young families and lack of community support. “When you’re isolated as a mom, you’re not capable of being a good mom,” she says. “Community is essential.”

Justice for Jude

On February 10, about 100 people gathered to protest the beating of Frank Jude, Jr., a black man who witnesses say was beaten by white off-duty police officers in October 2004. The beating has become a potential powder keg of city race relations and police misconduct after a Journal Sentinel story featured Jude’s beating February 6.
