Neighbor Spotlight – Jeff Poniewaz

Interviewing Milwaukee’s new Poet Laureate at the Urban Ecology Center is perfect. Not only is Jeff Poniewaz considered an eco-poet and a nature poet (he differentiates between the two in that the former carries a message, a call to action), he also sat on the original board of directors of the Riverside Nature Center which eventually morphed into the Urban Ecology Center. Quite at home, he exhibits pride in the place where, until recently, he taught his UWM course, “Literature of Ecological Vision.”

Neighbor Spotlight – Remembering Chuck Phillips

“…the fire of wild flowers.”

In Memory of Charles Leonard Phillips

by Ellen C. Warren

Farewell Chuck! Good friend to many. My friend. Marvelous poet. Owner of the unforgettable and inimitable resounding voice. Mentor and advisor to the young. Lifelong seeker and, sometimes, finder. Wise man with a heart of gold and a vision that roiled from the deepest darkness and leapt to the most beneficent light.

Neighbor Spotlight – Stonie Rivera

by Ellen C. Warren – Photo by Mike Miller She is a presence. Larger than life. Her thick, straight, black hair that shook and flashed onstage in her years as the lead singer for Dummy Club and Psycho Bunnies still catches your eye as she lightly lifts it from her shoulders in a movement that seems, somehow, iconic. Dark eyes set in an exotic face beam confidence, calm and humor.
