Further Down Stream September 2009

IN:SITE ART – As the September issue of the Currents goes to press, a week of events celebrating the temporary art project in the

Park East Corridor is running from Aug 23-30. This unique and creative use of public art is open for public viewing at 11 IN:SITE art

installations covering a 16 block area. The project was created to foster temporary publi cart in Milwaukee and make use of the Park East space. Project chair Pegi Christiansen said, “Thanks to the support of the Milwaukee Arts Board, stakeholders have provided thirteen local artists the opportunity to create installations that invite people to explore the Park East.” The Arts Board unanimously voted to award artist stipends for the work and a number of special events held throughout August have helped to showcase the project.

NEWS IN OUR AREA

GUILTY – Former alderman Mike McGee was found guilty on all nine federal counts of extortion and bribery on June 24 following six hours of deliberation by the jury. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct 24 where he faces up to 30 years, but likely much less. “Based upon the evidence, Ald. McGee’s guilt was his own and was not shared by the rest of the Common Council, the License Division, the city attorney’s office, or the Milwaukee Police Department, all of whom sit on every license hearing as active participants,” said Ald. Willie Hines. Still pending is the state’s case which is expected to resume in July unless a plea deal is reached.

CENTER ST NEWS – At long last, the Riverwest Artists Association is vacating its Post Office Box. RAA recently became the proud new owner of the former Jazz Gallery at 926 E. Center St., another building
previously owned by Bob Klavetter. Watch for a grand opening on Sat, July 26. The fresh energy being generated by all the new property owners on the street is spurring talk of getting a Center St. business association going again.
