Michael Zeidler is not your average 64-year-old. He starts everyday at 5 a.m. with a 6 mile run and finishes by a quarter of (that’s a 7.5 minute per mile pace). This fact alone puts Michael far above the norm for a sexagenarian. Might as well mention that he’s won Gold at the Badger State Games 8 times and took 5th in a National competition in Illinois recently.

Dr. Chow
“I’m totally entertained by the whole thing,” says Frank between chuckles. He’s talking about the Center Street Daze Annual Cart Race, which he’s emceed for the last five years. “I enjoy the ‘Born Losers’ who always lose.”
Pentaminoes – Doug Holst
When I practically stumbled over Doug and his 13-year old Italian greyhound, Lucy, sitting on the steps outside his east side apartment, my preconceptions were instantly dispelled. The almost-40-year old artist looks more like a college student, and made me suspect that he has an aging portrait of himself in an attic somewhere. Upstairs, I was met with several rooms jammed with dozens of brilliantly colored paintings. As we settled on his futon, listening to his well-worn Iron and Wine CD, the Milwaukee native apologized for “only” having a bachelor’s degree from UWM.
Sweat Equity
Jake Henes walks to work. This may not seem unusual, but it is, considering that Henes spends all day fixing cars. Henes, owner of Riverwest Automotive Service (801 E. Keefe Ave.), which opened in July, lives a few blocks from his shop. He does brakes, tune-ups, exhaust, electrical and engine repair, as well as custom work.
Marty Horning
Horning admits to an encyclopedic knowledge of Riverwest bars, taverns and restaurants, but more important to him are social justice and equality. Over the years, he’s done everything from volunteering at Peace Action Wisconsin to working with high school dropouts to dousing neo-Nazis at a civil rights march with sauerkraut.
