Accusations Fly as Court of Appeals Campaign Heats Up

Appellate Judge Charles Schudson accuses Shepherd Express of printing an error-riddled, disinformation and attack article to support Schudson’s campaign opponent, Joan Kessler. Kessler’s husband is a close personal friend of Shepherd publisher, Louis Fortis. Fortis insists, “Other than the small items we corrected, that article is 100 percent factually correct.” Another recent article in the Shepherd falsely charged that mayoral candidate Sandy Folaron had overdue property taxes in excess of $7000. Fortis was on hand at the Folaron campaign on election night to express his apologies.

Folaron Demands Shepherd Express Correct Slander

February 5, 2004–At a 3:00 p.m. news conference at City Hall, Mayoral Candidate Sandy Folaron demanded that the Shepherd Express explain the egregious error in a recent article that stated Folaron did not pay her taxes on time. This appeared in a story written by Doug Hissom in the latest issue of the newspaper on Wednesday, February 4th. Today Folaron confirmed with the City Treasurer that Hissom did not check the matter with them and that there were no requests for any of the candidates’ tax information.

Mayoral Candidates on “Ethnically Diverse Neighborhoods”

“Sherman Park, Riverwest, and Merrill Park are three of Milwaukee’s most ethnically diverse neighborhoods. Each year Milwaukee showcases its dynamic ethnic diversity with festivals at the lakefront. Yet a disconnect still persists between these inclusive, celebrative ethnic festivals and everyday reality in many of Milwaukee’s neighborhoods. How would you, as Mayor, help foster more communication and cooperation between different ethnic groups on a neighborhood level?”
