“Special” makes me think of those cartoon specials I saw as a kid. You know, the ones with the ’70s graphic of the word “special” spinning at you in Technicolor with that music going, so it’s like all the cartoon characters stumble out drunk, and little kids everywhere are traumatized for the rest of their lives…wait, that’s horrible.

Nile
Nile, which opened in April, is a salon, tattoo/piercing shop and jewelry store all rolled into one. Co-owned by husband and wife Jon and Jodi Westmore, Nile aims to take the sleaze and intimidation factor out of tattoos and piercing. Yet despite glossy fashion magazines, flowers, scented candles and an assortment of herbal teas scattered throughout the salon, Nile boasts a distinct Riverwest vibe.

Inside Fuel Cafe one May afternoon hipsters guzzle java in the smoky din to the whirr of the coffee grinder. Down the street, shoppers peruse naughty trinkets on the shelves of The Tool Shed, a female-friendly erotic boutique. A few blocks down the street, Riverwesters chow down on spicy African cuisine at Club Timbuktu. What do all of these businesses have in common? All are small, locally owned enterprises located on Center Street in Riverwest.
