“My mom made us stand on a popcorn bucket, because we were still little. She held her hand on our throats and had us say our names so she could feel the vibrations. Then she held her hand on her own throat and felt the vibrations as she said our names.”

Lisa Schelling likes plants, libraries, co-ops. Before she moved to Riverwest in August, 2010, she googled food co-op, and looked for something for rent within walking distance.

On New Year’s Eve 2011, I had a gathering at my house. Most of the people present that night, with a few exceptions, live on the 3400 blocks of Pierce, Fratney or Bremen Streets.

Theresa Kenney – Riverwest Neighborhood Association’s 2010 “Neighbor of the Year” – gets up early. Her morning routine includes brewing a cup of green tea and then surfing the listservs of activist organizations in Riverwest. She scans the latest chatter from the Riverwest Co-op, the RNA, and Riverwest Health Initiative, the Victory Garden Initiative, Transition Milwaukee, Milwaukee Urban Gardens and Concordia Gardens.
