Food for Thought: Become Your Own Best Doctor

There are times when we all need a good doctor to fix some problem like a broken arm or a serious infection, but the best doctor to guarantee optimum health and long life is in our own hands and minds. Over the past hundred years, we have surrendered our responsibility for good health to an elite group of medical professionals. I will admit these professionals have made some great advances, but many of us now live in fear that without a doctor, a hospital, or an insurance policy we are sure to succumb to some dreadful disease.

Community Building Through Journalism: Neighborhood Newspapers Make a Difference

When David Burton at the University of Missouri wrote the words above, he was describing a trend towards smaller, more localized newspapers in his state. He says, “Southwest Missouri is dominated by small community newspapers, which throw their news and editorial weight behind providing local coverage. The finest community newspapers know they are key stakeholders in the forces that help build and grow their communities.”

What Do Standardized Test Scores Really Prove?

Suppose for a moment that they had gotten away with it, that no one had found out. Suppose for a moment that the scores had come in, showing a quantum leap in student achievement without any suspicion of wrongdoing. The assumption would be that Palmer Elementary School, 1900 N. 1st St., had been doing everything right, that they were perhaps the only school in the district that had adequately prepared its students to master the content of the Terra Nova exam.
