“They’re guardians,” Marina Lee explains, referring
to the brightly-colored fiberglass sea monsters,
giraffes and creatures of mystery that inhabit her
back yard and so many Milwaukee playgrounds and
schoolyards. Kids need guardians to watch over them,
and Marina’s sculptures provide them.

Prospect Ave. An exhibition of work by the artists who received Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary L. Nohl Fund Fellowships for Individual Artists in 2008. It brings together work by four artists selected in the Established Artist category: Xav Leplae, Shana McCaw & Brent Budsberg (a collaborative) and Iverson White; and five artists selected in the Emerging Artist category: Tate Bunker, Bobby Ciraldo & Andrew Swant (a collaborative), Frankie Latina and Barbara Miner. RiverwestArtWalk 2009
RiverwestArtists Association’s ArtWalk 2009 marks the 30th Anniversary ofWisconsin’s oldest and largest walking art tour. Conceived in 1979 incollaboration with the Milwaukee Art Museum as a way to introduce the public tothe way artists live and work, ArtWalk gave birth to the Riverwest ArtistsAssociation.

IN:SITE ART – As the September issue of the Currents goes to press, a week of events celebrating the temporary art project in the
Park East Corridor is running from Aug 23-30. This unique and creative use of public art is open for public viewing at 11 IN:SITE art
installations covering a 16 block area. The project was created to foster temporary publi cart in Milwaukee and make use of the Park East space. Project chair Pegi Christiansen said, “Thanks to the support of the Milwaukee Arts Board, stakeholders have provided thirteen local artists the opportunity to create installations that invite people to explore the Park East.” The Arts Board unanimously voted to award artist stipends for the work and a number of special events held throughout August have helped to showcase the project.
