In September 1998, the school community at La Escuela Fratney submitted an expansion plan to the Board of School Directors. It was the result of years of planning that involved parents, school staff, and the community. Not being part of the Neighborhood Schools Initiative that built additions to the most crowded schools in the city, Fratney’s building plan was put on the back burner until now. Before the end of the school year, ground breaking will be held for a long-awaited $10 million addition that will nearly double the school’s current space.

Born to Ride
For a city of “don’t blink — you might miss it” summers, Milwaukee has a surprisingly fast-growing bike culture. According to David Schlabowske, Milwaukee Program Manager of the Bicycle Federation of WI, “Whatever you want to do, there’s a group of people in Milwaukee that are doing it.”
“We are poised on the verge of a bicycling renaissance,” he continued. “Milwaukee County has a whole bunch of bicycle facilities.”

On Foot – Extending Riverwalk
The Riverwalk that winds through downtown Milwaukee is an icon of the New Urbanism. It threads its way along the base of old factories and towering office buildings, a beautiful, comfortable, human-scale transport system in the heart of the city.
