Riverwest Neighborhood Association News

At the November 11 RNA meeting, Dave Schlabowske of the Milwaukee office of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin attended to ask for feedback on the status of bike lanes and bike rack sites in Milwaukee. Current bike routes were set up in 1993 and have not been reviewed since. BFW is currently reviewing the entire network, filling in gaps, and repainting lanes. . . .

Shelly and Andy

I can’t think of a couple who better embody the punk “Do-It-Yourself” ethic than Shelly McClone and Andy Yeager. The first time I set foot in the Riverwest Co-op Shelly was working there. I remember being welcomed and greeted with a smile. She was cleaning the store, wearing a tight multi-striped polyester skirt and a t-shirt with “Chop the Onions, Mince the Garlic, Smash the State” printed on it. A snake tattoo, among others, caught my eye as it coiled around her arm.

Riverwest Currents publisher and neighborhood activist Vince Bushell was honored as an “Unsung Hero” by the Milwaukee Common Council in November. Bushell was one of four people nominated by Third District Ald. Mike D’Amato for their service to the community. Among the list of accomplishments cited by D’Amato were Bushell’s dedication to Garden Park and the farmer’s market, his role in starting the Riverwest Co-op, his work on the Currents, and his dedication to the neighborhood Fourth of July celebration. . . .

In the end, the Resistance was known for one thing — they simply would not participate. Not in the 24-hour economy, the 60-hour work week, the flag-waving parades, the media manias, the permanent fear, the cheers for the troops. And then there was their mark, of course. It crept into daily life, until it became a constant reminder that these really were bleak times. Until one day you no longer knew who was in control — the empire that was everywhere — or this invisible revolution.
