Gwen Moore made history last November when she won her bid to represent Wisconsin’s 4th Congressional District. Not only is she the first African-American to represent Milwaukee, she is also the first woman our district has ever sent to Washington. She won a clear mandate from Riverwest voters in the primary, where she gained 71% of the Democratic vote in local precincts. District-wide, she garnered 69% of the vote in the final election.

David Riemer to Challenge Scott Walker
A resident of the Washington Heights neighborhood, Riemer is running on a strong platform of fiscal responsibility and government efficiency, issues to which Walker also pays plenty of lip service. But Riemer, a moderate Democrat, says there’s a real difference between their strategies. “Walker is consistently underestimating expenses and overestimating revenues. This is NOT an honest budget,” he says, referring to the county budget passed last month.

It’s Happening
The official buzz is in the streets. In mid-January Tom Daykin wrote a front page Sunday feature in the Journal Sentinel about Riverwest as an up-and-coming neighborhood. It will be interesting to see what and who we “draw” in the next couple of years. Will the changes be substantial and dramatic? Will we lose our diversity? Will old-timers feel pushed out by “outsiders?”
